weekly woot!

This week’s woot goes out to recycling artist Emily Kircher.

Emily has two primary product lines made from recycled materials: handmade mosaic picture frames and crocheted rugs. Materials for her mosaics include broken tiles and old dishes, and her rugs are made from used clothing and fabric scraps.

In addition to her wonderful creations, two other things about Emily caught my attention:

She, too, is a science lab runaway!
Emily’s path took her from biology/environmental toxicology to improving the environment by recycling one scrap at a time. There must be some common neural pathway connecting science and the arts … one of my favorite etsy teams, Mad Scientists of Etsy, is composed of scientist crafters … some excellent, and unusual, stuff there.

I have piles of leftover t-shirt fabric (from t-shirt quilts) just waiting to be recycled. I love going to my kids’ ball games, but there is a lot of down time involved. So every spring I search for a new portable handwork project … maybe this year I’ll try my hand at some t-shirt crochet bags!

Check out her etsy store and blog. Besides, her name is Emily …
