blue sky and apple pie

Apple pie. Perfect for breakfast, or anytime. Though maybe not 25 at once!

Sunday was the annual Volante Farms Apple Pie contest. And, as last year’s winner, I had the fun of being a guest judge. It turns out that this judging stuff is not as easy as it looks. But it was fun to see all the pie variations and try a peck load of different apples. All said and done, I still don’t think you can beat a Northern Spy for pie baking.

I wanted to make an appropriate apron to wear for the contest and present to this year’s winner. Unfortunately, it was surprisingly difficult to find the right fabric. Most “apple print” fabrics are more than a little old-school. But I finally got my hands on a modern looking fabric at Sew Fresh Fabrics. It can be a little nervous-making to buy fabric online, but Peg has quality fabrics and gave great feedback regarding my choices. Thanks Peg! (And I even had enough fabric to make an extra to put in my etsy shop!)

See the Volante Farms website for all the recipes and my recipes page for what is still my favorite from last year.

And thanks, Dad! Your inspiration has brought many a pie in the sky idea to fruition … with a piece of fine cheddar on the side, of course …
